Precizări de presă transmise de ambasadorul României

Urmare demersurilor Ambasadei privind articolul „How Romanian criminals terrorise our streets”,  publicat de Daily Express la 27 februarie 2013, la 1.03.2013 ziarul respectiv a publicat următoarele precizări:

"Romania has been active in dealing with criminality

I would like to take issue with your article (“How Romanian criminals terrorise our streets”, February 27).

Criminality should be dealt with as a phenomenon and not referred to in relation to ethnicity or nationality. Romania has been a very active European partner in dealing with criminality.

Due to the excellent co-operation between the Romanian authorities and the police forces in Britain, Romanian criminality has been effectively discouraged in London as well as in the UK.

The Metropolitan Police report speaks about “suspects in connection with crimes”, which not necessarily led to convictions.

A brief perusal of the facts shows that conviction rates of Romanians for serious crimes, including murder, is very low.

Only ten Romanian nationals have been arrested on suspicion of murder in the last five years.

  • De asemenea, cotidianul Daily Telegraph a publicat, la pagina 25, rubrica Letters to the editor, următorul mesaj:

Romanian immigrants

"Sir – According to official statistics, a total of 5,485,164 crimes were committed in England and Wales in 2012.

This is 9,540 represents just 7.9 per cent of the total Romanian population (120,000) currently living in this country. In contrast, the overall criminality rate among the general population for the same year was 9.16 per cent. Moreover, Romanian offenders in England and Wales were mainly involved in non-violent crimes (64 per cent of the total offences were thefts). According to the police, only 10 Romanian nationals have been arrested on suspicion of murder in the last five years. In the same year, English and Welsh courts convicted 9,540 Romanians of crimes, representing 0.17 per cent of all crimes committed that year. Out of the 9,540, at the end of 2012 only 624 Romanian citizens were in detention here.

Misinterpreted figures fuel anti-immigration rhetoric (report, February 22). Because restrictions for Romanian and Bulgarians will be lifted at the end of the year, they have become targets of almost every debate related to immigration. The vast majority of Romanians and Bulgarians living in the Britain are honest and make important contributions to the welfare of their host country.
