"Democratizing capitalism? The political economy of post-communist transformations in Romania, 1989-2001", by Liliana Pop
A vast process of redistribution and redefinition of property rights in Romania has led in just over a decade to the emergence of a form of capitalism that preserves some of the aspirations for social justice and equality of the previous era. This book analyses the two major components of the post-communist transformations in Romania that account for this new form of capitalism: the reconstitution of politics as democratic politics and the replacement of the plan by the market as the mechanism for economic co-ordination. In spite of setbacks and reversals, a close examination of the institutional and cultural dimensions of these processes reveals that meaningful change has occurred and there are grounds for optimism as the country prepares to join the European Union.
The book will appeal to readers interested in cultural aspects of post-communism, the politics and economy of Romania and Central and Eastern Europe, and EU enlargement.

A wide range of contributors, both academics and practitioners, approach questions related to Romania’s policies, its relations with the EU, and the negotiations for accession leading up to the European Commission Report of September 2006.
