Romanian amateur astronomers win two international prizes
Bucharest, March 12 /Agerpres/ - UNESCO and the International Astronomical Union, the organisers of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA 2009) have recently selected five winners of their prizes extended for the best events organised in the world under the last IYA 2009 cornerstone project called Galilean Nights, with two of them going to Romania.

Embassy of Romania/ On 10 March 2010, the Embassy of Romania in London organized, in partnership with the School of Slavonic and East European Studies of the University College London (SSEES – UCL) a lecture- debate by Mr Andrei Căpuşan, a Romanian historian and diplomat, on the topic „Friends and allies-Romanians and the British throughout history”. The lecture is part of the series of events meant to celebrate 130 years of Romanian-British diplomatic relations.

Embassy of Romania – London/ On the 20th of February, 2010, at the prestigious location in 1 Belgrave Square, in the presence of the Ambassador of Romania, Dr Ion Jinga and the director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, Mr. Dorian Branea, held an event dedicated to 10th anniversary of the Romanian website www.romani.co.uk. Mădălina Benson, was the young Romanian who founded one of the most well-known channels of communication used by the Romanian community living in the United Kingdom. These days, the activity of the website is coordinated by Inno Brezeanu, a successful young Romanian working in the City of London. The community www.romani.co.uk numbers today more than 10 thousands active members.

Embassy of Romania – London/ During the 16th and 17th of February 2010, Dr Ion Jinga, The Ambassador of Romania in the UK visited the Romanian communities of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Tyne and Wear Metropolitan Area which is the 6th urban area in Great Britain. His Excellency was invited there by Mrs. Mihaela R. Dickinson, the Honorary Consul of Romania in the area, this being the 2nd visit scheduled in the Embassy’s agenda on 2010, concerning the Romanian communities located far away from London, following the visit in Leeds from January 2010.

Embassy of Romania-London/ On 13th of January 2010, the Ambassador of Romania, Dr Ion Jinga visited the prestigious British Library holding a collection of over 150 millions works (books, manuscripts, magazines, articles), know as the biggest library in the world. Among its famous works which were presented to the Ambassador of Romania by the library’s officials are: the Manuscripts of The Lindisfarnes Gospels, the Buddhist text “Diamond Sutra” – considered the first book ever printed, Gutenberg’s Bible, first ever printed book in Europe, the 1215 Magna Carta Libertatum, a notebook of Leonardo da Vinci, a 1623 manuscript of Shakespeare, and his first ever printed edition, “First Folio”.
